The Reserve Shazam Comes from Small Community

The Reserve Shazam competed fiercely in the 13-team Upstate South Carolina 7.0 40 Mixed Doubles league to qualify for the State Championship in Florence, SC. After some incredible play at the state tournament, the Reserve Shazam qualified for the USTA Southern Mixed Doubles Sectional Championships in Chattanooga. However, ten teams from nine states qualified, so what's so special about The Reserve Shazam?

First of all, The Reserve Shazam is a community-based team hailing from The Reserve at Lake Keowee, located in the small town of Sunset in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

We have a small base to draw from with about 125 full-time residents. However, we have a great interest in tennis with a 21-member rooster and well over 50 active players in the community.

The tennis program at the Reserve, including both social and competitive tennis, is rapidly expanding. 2015 is only our second season as a team and for some only the second year of competitive play, and we ended up at the Southern Sectionals. We intend to compete for many years to come in mixed as well as men's and women's leagues.

Most of the team is well over the minimum age of 40. In fact, our team's median and average age is about 58. We had fun competing against teams much younger than us.

Our team has spirit. In fact, we win the "Team that Has the Most Fun" award at every tournament we attend. Our regular match play at the Reserve is fun for all levels. Our Friday evening tennis round robin typically draws 20-40 people and has gone on until well past midnight.

In the end, we played well at Sectionals, but lost 1-2 to Mississippi on day 2 in a very close match, with one loss coming after a match tiebreak. It's likely that Mississippi is going to the finals. We were well positioned for the finals if we had won just one of the two matches we lost to Mississippi.

Thank you USTA for running excellent tournaments at State and Sectionals.

We love tennis, The Reserve and our tennis program and team founder, Linda Davis.
